This year Education Week is focusing on The Arts. At HWPS as part of the Arts Program, we have chosen to use this opportunity to develop our students understanding and respect of Asian culture and diversity.
Students will rotate through 5 activities focusing on Asian Arts and Culture.
- A Bollywood Dancing workshop with a professional dance instructor
- Taiko drumming Performance- this is an incursion in the hall
- Decorating a Korean round fan each as well as 2 Japanese Koinobori mascots for their connect group
- Learning a Chinese song about looking for a friend
- Learning about Sumo wrestling, making miniature Sumos.
Students will be rotating around the school with a teacher in established multi-age groups for the day. We call these Connect groups.
At 2.40pm we will all meet on the Basketball Court (fingers crossed for the weather). We will have a Bollywood Dance off, Whole school singalong.
Students can dress up in an Asian themed costume. Eg. Manga, flag colours, traditional dress, kimono, karate, Taekwondo, sport team colours, as a Asian food -Sushi roll, pop stars (K-Pop), let your imagination go wild!

We are pleased to invite you to attend an evening with Professor Lea Waters (PhD), founder of the Visible Wellbeing Program being implemented at Hawthorn West PS in 2018.
Professor Lea Waters is a psychologist, researcher, speaker and author who specializes in positive education, positive parenting, and positive organizations.
Professor Lea Waters will be speaking on Wednesday 9th May, at 6.00pm in the auditorium at Melbourne Girls College.
This presentation will introduce families to Visible Wellbeing, which combines the science of wellbeing with the science of learning to make wellbeing visible in all classes and across co-curricular at the school. Visible Wellbeing is the culmination of 20 years of high-impact research in psychology and education conducted and published by Lea Waters PhD.
In this presentation, Lea shares a few of the Visible Wellbeing practices that can be easily used by parents to support the wellbeing of their children at home. We warmly encourage you to attend if you would like to hear more about this program along with its implementation at Hawthorn West PS.

Susan McLean is Australia’s foremost expert in the area of cyber safety and Internet use by young people. Widely known as the ‘Cyber Cop’, she was the first Victoria Police Officer appointed to a position involving cyber safety and young people.
Susan will present to the Hawthorn West Community about keeping your children safe online. Most children now have electronic devices and mobile phones from a young age that are connected to the Internet.
We strongly encourage one parent per family to attend the evening in order to help prepare you with knowledge and strategies for keeping your children safe online.

The movie that will been chosen by the JSC to be screened this year is “The Emoji Movie”. Please come along and join us – it will be a perfect opportunity to relax and spend time with family and friends. Pizza will be served and ice creams will be available to snack on prior to the movie starting.

Every Thursday lunchtime at Hawthorn West Primary School icypoles are available for all students to purchase. The cost of icypoles is $1 each.
We require 2 parent volunteers each week to run the icypole sales. You can roster on once a year, once a term or as many times as you like. This is a fun, quick and easy way to get involved and help out. This year you can sign up online for the dates that suit. (Note: This is a change from previous years where parents volunteered and were then rostered on).
– arriving approx. 15 minutes prior to lunchtime to set up (collect and sort icypoles from the freezer)
– selling icypoles for 20-30 minutes
– counting and bagging the money and submitting it to the school office

The evening is your best chance this year to let your hair down, meet the rest of the school community and raise much needed funds that will go towards implementing the outdoor spaces redevelopment.

Hawthorn West Primary will be celebrating Book Week in Week 6!
The theme this year is Escape to Everywhere, highlighting how books can help us escape and expand our minds, which lends itself beautifully to our whole school focus on student well-being and positive psychology!
We will be having a dress up day and whole school parade on Friday 25th of August, so get those creative juices flowing and start thinking about your costumes today!!
Other fun things to look forward to include the writing competition and story time in the library. With more wonderful activities still to come, we will keep you posted!
